Here at Sunnyside, we know it can be challenging to resist cravings and temptations. But with the right activities, you can stay on track and feel good about your progress. Here are 10 great suggestions for activities you can do right now to combat cravings for alcohol—without ever leaving your home.

1. Take a hot bath or shower

Studies have shown that taking a hot bath or shower releases serotonin and dopamine—the body’s feel-good hormones—which help you relax and unwind. This, in turn, can also help you take your mind off cravings and reduce stress and anxiety, which can trigger drinking urges. You can add essential oils or bath salts to your bath to enhance the experience.

2. Practice yoga or meditation

Yoga and meditation are great ways to calm the mind and reduce stress. They can also help you focus on your breathing and stay present in the moment, which can be helpful when dealing with urges to drink. Need a prompt? There are many online resources available. Just Google.

3. Read a book

Reading is a great distraction from the temptation to drink. Find a comfortable spot and immerse yourself in a new world. Choose a book you’ve wanted to read for a while or try something new.

4. Watch a movie or TV show

Another way to immerse yourself in a new world and distract yourself from drinking is by watching a movie or TV show. Treat yourself to a new release or pull up an old favorite you’ve seen a dozen times.

5. Cook a healthy meal

Cooking a healthy meal can be a great way to focus your energy on something positive. Choose a recipe you’ve wanted to try or experiment with new ingredients. Not sure what to make? You can find millions of options by Googling.

6. Exercise

Ever heard of a runner’s high? It’s the sense of euphoria a runner enjoys caused by the body’s release of endorphins. You can get that feeling from any cardiovascular workout. Even if you don’t get the so-called “high,” you will definitely reap the benefits of reduced stress, improved mood, and boosted energy levels.

7. Call a friend or family member

Talking to someone you trust can be a great way to distract yourself from temptations and get support. Reach out to a friend or family member and catch up, or meet for an ice cream.

8. Journal

Writing down your thoughts and feelings helps you process emotions and gain clarity. You can also use journaling to set goals and track your progress.

9. Listen to music

Listening to music improves mood and lifts spirits. Choose music that makes you feel good or try something new. And, feel free to sing at the top of your lungs or dance around your living room!

10. Take up a hobby

Hobbies are a wonderful way to occupy your mind. Whether you’re painting, knitting, or playing an instrument, learning and practicing something new can provide hours of enjoyment. You won’t even miss that drink!

Moderation and mindfulness are journeys. It’s normal to have cravings from time to time. The key is to stay committed to your goals and find healthy ways to cope with stress and other drinking triggers. Engaging in relaxation techniques, seeking support from loved ones, and devoting yourself to hobbies are just a few strategies to help keep you on track and successfully navigate challenging moments to achieve a cravings-free day.
